Muscat Marathon

Measuring the socio-economic impacts of a national sporting event in Oman and supporting the case for future investment into major sports events.

Context and objectives

Portas was engaged to calculate the socio-economic impact from the 2019 Muscat Marathon and to support the case to the Ministry of Health and other government entities for further investment into sporting events to help drive a healthier nation.

Approach

  • Extensive data was collected via post event participation surveys, interviews and other means to calculate the numbers of participants and spectators who were inspired to be active from the event.
  • Using this data and additional inputs from GDHX health database, Ministry of Health, WHO database, research papers and others, the health, societal and economic impacts of the marathon were modelled and quantified

Achievements

Demonstrated the case for further investment into major sports events by modelling six scenarios for resulting economic, societal and health benefits:

  • Annual impact of 2019 Muscat Marathon in 1 year.
  • Impact of 2019 Muscat Marathon over the lifetime of participants.
  • Cumulative impact of 1 event held per year over 20 years.
  • Impact of 1 event held per year over 20 years and the extended impact throughout the lifetime of participants.
  • Cumulative total impact of portfolio of monthly events held for 20 years.
  • Total impact of monthly events held for 20 years and the extended impact throughout the lifetime of participants.
